Branstad’s unemployment office veto ruled unconstitutional by Iowa Supreme Court

Gov. Terry Branstad’s veto that closed 36 Iowa unemployment offices last summer is unconstitutional, the Iowa Supreme Court unanimously ruled in an opinion released this morning.

The ruling confirms Polk County Judge Brad McCall’s ruling in December that sided with opponents of the closures and who argued that a governor cannot redirect money struck through in a line-item veto.
