- Preceded by a reception for new and former senators to meet each other
- New Senate President Arnold van der Valk
- Meetings over the Summer between Faculty Senate leadership and P&S Council leadership to coordinate areas of mutual concern
- Budget and 2010-2015 Strategic Planning are focus for Fall
- New Blog being set up for faculty to discuss (will require faculty status and log-in)
- October meeting will focus on Budget and Strategic Plan
- President Elect Michael Owen
- working on filling committee appointments and planning for Spring conference
- Provost Betsy Hoffman
- Welcome change in Fall reception from Reiman Gardens to MU as both cost savings and increased participation
- Good things happening at ISU
- Enrollment data to be released on Wednesday will show either highest or second highest amount ever; aproximatly 1,000 more students than year before, largest increase is new students from China
- Largest increase in research funding, $48m for July and $39m for August, two-month total is more than 1/3 of previous year
- 93 or 94 new faculty, with retirements and departures, expect positive direction
- Bad News
- Have been told to expect a 5%-10% mid-year reversion; [State] Revenue Estimating Conference report due October 7
- Expect the state revenues to lag the rest of the country and next years cuts will be larger than this years
- After October report, Governor Culver can either do across the board cuts or call in the Legislature for targeted cuts
- H1N1
- ISU has not experienced cases to date as other universities have
- First 10 cases each week are sent in for testing, so far only one case determined to H1N1
- Recommend that everyone have flu shot, wash hands
- Instructions sent out to be kind to students and employees, and stay home yourself if you are sick
- Question from Audience: What portion of stimulus funds distributed by the state are represented in the July/Aug research totals? Answer: approximately $10m
