What is AFSCME Local 96?

It is your Union.

AFSCME, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, is the largest union for workers in the public service with 1.4 million members nationwide.

Local 96 represents all clerical employees at Iowa State University who are not supervisory or designated as confidential.

All Local 96 members and officers are merit staff employees at Iowa State. Members of AFSCME work together to ensure fair treatment, fair benefits and fair wages for all workers.

AFSCME is made up of public service employees, including everyone from blue-collar workers to health care professionals. Members set the agenda by voting in elections as well as making decisions that directly affect the organization.

Yes it’s true, it is your union. Whether you elect to join and pay your fair share in the form of dues, AFSCME represents you when bargaining a contract between the State of Iowa and you for fair wages and benefits. Contract negotiations are not free—someone must pay the bill. Iowa State clerical employees across campus and in other parts of the states have joined together for the benefit of all.
